Dana, I’d be interested in learning about your motivation for doing these interviews and sharing them! Are you studying Ifa/Candomblé, or are you a member of a related community? I’d love to chat with you if you’d be open to it! I commented on your video on the feminine in Candomblé a few minutes ago and came to your channel to learn a bit more about the work you’re doing. I’m a grad student at FSU studying Candomblé and I’m always interested in broadening my network and knowledge by talking to and learning from people close to the practice! Also, Iya and Baba provided a wonderful explanation of axé as it’s used in speech/as an exclamation!

Thank you for sharing! I’m a graduate student writing my thesis on women, healing, possession, and personhood in Candomblè so this interview was very helpful! Iya Fayomi makes a very good point about how every lineage and every person’s practices are different, so we must take that into account when discussing feminine power and menstruation in ritual. It seems like much of the research on that particular subject-limited though it is-tends towards the notion that women’s energy/influence during their cycle is “dirty” or “chaotic,” despite the fact that in my own conversations this idea varies from Baba/Iya, from filha/filho, from person to person based on how they work with Spirit, to which orixás they belong, and so on. Many scholars of ADR like Candomblé seem to fixate on what they deem the “more traditional” lineages, terreiros, and communities, which leads to the circulation and popularization of notions like women’s power being “dirty” during menstruation so that people think this is the only way initiates think about the topic. But the beautiful, wonderful thing about ADR is that it’s always been adaptable, personal, relational, and tailorable to an individual person’s medicinal and healing needs. And while “traditional” features of ADR will always be important, it’s also important to consider the history of these healing networks: a history wherein they emerged from people tailoring their ritual/healing practices, medicines, and wisdom to their New World circumstances to form something at once new, “traditional,” and timeless.
